APR BBC Makes East African History with Bronze Medal, Mpoyo Breaks Three-Point Record in High-Scoring Rout

In a record-setting finale at Pretoria’s SunBet Arena, APR BBC capped off their historic BAL campaign by securing the bronze medal—an East African first; after thumping Egypt’s Al Ittihad 123–90.

The game was defined by the electric performance of Rwandan forward Axel Mpoyo, who scored 32 points and buried 10 three-pointers, surpassing Will Perry’s previous mark of nine in a single BAL game.

APR also set a new record for most threes in a single game with 25 makes, and their 123 points are now the most by any team in BAL history.

APR dominated from start to finish, leading at the end of every quarter. Mpoyo’s sharpshooting set the tone early, while his teammates kept the pressure on with teamwork and relentless pace.

Al Ittihad’s Ibrahim Abdelrahman Mohamed turned in a strong effort, dropping 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to match the intensity of APR’s onslaught.

By finishing third, APR marks a milestone for East African basketball, becoming the first team from the region to reach the BAL podium. Al Ittihad ended fourth, despite their best efforts.

The tournament’s grand finale comes tomorrow, when Al Ahli Tripoli faces defending champions Petro de Luanda at 4:00 PM at SunBet Arena; a showdown sure to crown the 2025 BAL champion.
