From Injuries to Triumph: Mugeni Sabine's Unbreakable Spirit
Mugeni Sabine, a prominent name in Rwandan basketball, shared insights about her life beyond the sport and what motivates her, even at the risk of losing her time.
Sep 30, 2024In an in-depth interview with Ballerzone.africa, Mugeni reflected on the challenging times marked by injuries, particularly when she suffered an Achilles tendon injury for the second time.
“Willpower is strength,” are words that come from this 39-year-old player, who explains that she has never been intimidated by difficult times but has continued to grow in basketball, which she considers a family sport because many of her relatives played it.
As she notes, some of her family members who played basketball inspired her to take up the sport at a very young age and to overcome the fear of competing with older players. “I was scared to join the national team at 14 because everyone was older and I was the youngest, but I played with my older brother, and my parents felt at ease knowing I would be safe.”
She mentioned that she once took a two-year break from the sport due to injuries.
“The first time I got injured was in 2019 when I hurt my Achilles tendon on the court. When I got injured, I said it was no problem; I would return. After two years, in 2021, I got injured again, and I thought it was over for me in basketball.”
Indeed, feeling exhausted doesn’t turn dreams into reality! She spent time recovering from those injuries, feeling weak and doubtful about returning to the court. However, while reflecting, she reassured herself that injury could not rob her of the joy she found in the game, as she believed giving up would be cowardice.
Mugeni admits it was not easy for her to return and to set aside other passions, dedicating her energy and thoughts to basketball, which she could only do because of her love for the game.
Many fans of Mugeni Sabine wonder if there are other interests that attract her beyond basketball. She elaborated on this, satisfying their curiosity.
She revealed that she loves reading books and hiking. “I really enjoy reading books or, when I’m relaxed, going into the mountains. Climbing mountains strengthens the lungs because as you ascend, it makes your lungs work harder; when you come back down, it feels like you’ve inhaled pure oxygen.”
One of her highlights includes playing in front of the esteemed President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and his family, saying it touched her heart.
“When you’re on the court with people around, and the arena is full, and you see the president and his family, you feel five times more energy because it motivates you to perform well. It’s an honor to represent the country with the support of its leader.”
In her words of gratitude to the fans, she stated, “We thank you because we wouldn't get anywhere without you. We are on the court, but seeing you encourages us and boosts our victory.”
